WHAT IS SLEEP APNEA?

Many patients throughout Schaumburg, IL and the Chicago area suffer from sleep apnea, a concerning medical condition that causes a person to stop breathing multiple times throughout the night. Along with snoring, daytime fatigue, and other symptoms, sleep apnea can increase the risk of heart problems, stroke, and other serious medical issues. When central or obstructive sleep apnea is suspected, a lab-based sleep study may be recommended to diagnose the condition. Horizon Medical Center features an on-site sleep laboratory for apnea to make getting the diagnosis and treatment of the disorder convenient for our patients. Our specialized sleep lab is designed to allow our Sleep Apnea Schaumburg IL physicians to monitor you while you sleep and determine if sleep apnea is affecting your health.

WHAT TAKES PLACE IN A SLEEP LABORATORY?

Sleep studies, also referred to as polysomnography, are conducted at Horizon Medical Center for the diagnosis of sleep apnea or other sleep disorders. When you arrive at our sleep laboratory, we will have you rest comfortably in a quiet area. As you sleep throughout the night, our team will use advanced electroencephalogram (EEG) equipment to evaluate for breathing cessation and monitor your oxygen levels, heart and brain activity, and other physiological information. Our physicians will then analyze the data collected from your sleep study. A follow-up visit will then be scheduled to review your results and discuss sleep apnea treatment options, such as continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) or oral appliance therapy.
